This website describes the installation and monitoring services provided by the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC). CSIC uses Distributed Fibre Optic Sensors (DFOS) to develop innovative sensing solutions for civil construction and infrastructure projects.
Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing
DFOS provides an innovative, economic and effective way to monitor the performance and health of pile foundations and other geotechnical infrastructure. The technology produces continuous strain and temperature profiles using signals sent along optical fibres attached to, or embedded in, structures. It produces much more comprehensive data than conventional, single point strain gauges.
CSIC sensing systems improve understanding of the performance of structures, during and after construction, and gives insights into the complex soil-structure interaction mechanisms involved, helping to identify localised problem areas. They provide improved insights into real-time asset performance, allowing infrastructure designers, constructors, owners and managers to make informed judgments concerning design performance and structure remediation.
