Dr Loizos Pelecanos joined the university as a Research Associate in Civil Engineering in February 2013. He previously studied at Imperial College London obtaining an MEng in Civil Engineering in 2009 and a PhD in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in 2013. His doctoral research work concentrated on computational seismic analysis of earth dams and included extensive static and dynamic nonlinear finite element analysis.

His current work in the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction is concerned with field monitoring of geotechnical structures (such as piled foundations) primarily using fibre optics, associated data analysis procedures and numerical back-analysis of the structural response, using simplified finite element models. The aim of this work is to establish reliable structural analysis models and parameters using appropriate field monitoring data.
